Mitchell S12 Magazine

Post by jmclark@tampabay.rr.com » Thu Nov 14, 2019 7:40 pm

I'm new to the Mitchell and to this forum. From what I've seen, Mitchell Standard and GC magazines with an S10 or an S10B Model number, have a 1,000-foot capacity. So, I'm guessing the "S" denotes the Standard Camera and "10" equates to 1,000 feet and that an S4 translates to 400-feet. Is this correct and do magazines marked S12 have a 1,200-foot capacity? Or, are they 2,000-foot or some other capacity, as the S12 is significantly larger in size than the S10. I have found reference in a 1934 Mitchell catalog to 400-ft and 1,000-ft magazines, both also available with a double-throat for Bi-pack use. No other sizes were offered and no model designations are given. I suspect these S12's were from the later GC era beginning in the 1940's, as the S12 example I've seen had an acorn tag with a Glendale address. But this is all a guess on my part.

Any information or explanation regarding the S12's, or for any Mitchell magazines in general is greatly appreciated. Thank you so much!

John,

The 4 &10 designations do ring true. The only 1200 ft mags I have seen are for 16mm film as that is a regular size. There are a few NC 2000 ft mags made that appear to be 3piece speciality units. That would give almost 20 minutes running time but would require takeup torque motors.
35mm standardized film lengths in feet were and still are 100, 200, 400, 1000 and 2000. The 2000' generally is for print film.
16mm sizes: 100, 200,400, 1200.
