Role of the Mitchell Filming the Atomic Bomb

Post by mitchellbnc » Fri Aug 08, 2014 9:53 am

Hello members. As we all know, the Mitchell Camera was used extensively in all realms of scientific research. When film documentation of atomic bomb tests were needed, the obvious choice was the Mitchell Camera.

The Army Signal Corps was the division tasked with photographing the events. The photos below are from the Signal Corps Photographic Center web site and belonged to Ernest C. Baumert who was chief of Maintenance and Engineering at the APC.

If we have member who were involved with the Signal Corps and using the Mitchell Camera, we would be honored to see some of your thoughts and comments in this thread. Enlarge any photo by clicking on it.

Great photos from the Signal Corps. Not only did they use Mitchells for documenting the development of the atomic bomb but NASA used them too. In fact, the entire scientific community has heavily relied on these precision machines. Just name any category and the Mitchell was there as the "go to" camera.

Seems to me that although major Hollywood studios were the most high profile users of these cameras, one should not gloss over the impact Mitchell had on all other aspects of film documentation.

I submit to you the following iconic photo which for me, pretty well sums up the look of the Mitchell when capturing the atom bomb.

Hello all. This was an important chapter in history no matter how disturbing the subject is to many of us. Included here is yet another important photo from the annuals of filming the atomic tests with a Mitchell camera.

Be well,
Justin
